As part of the City of Kingston’s Your Stories, Our Histories program, community organizations are encouraged to tell their stories in their own words in a newly available exhibit space at City Hall. Community exhibits within the program will feature stories of the people, events or groups that have shaped Kingston.

Your Stories, Our Histories (YSOH) started as a public engagement process in 2018 to address the legacy of Sir John A Macdonald and foster community discussions about how and by whom Kingston’s stories are told. The program is evolving to offer free exhibit space at City Hall for the community to tell their stories.

YSOH exhibits will last approximately eight months to one year and will be installed each spring. The City of Kingston will provide exhibition space at no charge. There is currently one small exhibition space to display written stories and physical items.

Submit your application by using the application form below or by calling 613-546-0000. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

A general theme, story or message is required for the application, but exhibit text does not need to be finalized to apply. Applicants will work with City staff to develop and edit exhibition text. City staff will select the first applicant in early December 2023 and install the exhibit in spring 2024.

YSOH community exhibits are connected to a priority in Kingston’s Strategic Plan to drive inclusive economic growth by fostering culture, history, education, arts and recreation.

  • Thank you for your interest in the Your Stories, Our Histories community exhibition space. Exhibits must be non-political and non-partisan; promotional or commercial exhibits are not permitted. Each exhibit lasts approximately eight months to one year. We accept applications year-round and will install exhibits during the spring.

    Applicants must include a general theme, story or message in their application, but the exhibit text does not need to be finalized in order to apply. Exhibits can include high resolution images and three-dimensional objects. Participants will work with City of Kingston staff to develop and edit text and images. City staff will print and mount all text panels, labels and objects for each exhibit. Participants will be consulted on final designs and plans prior to printing and mounting. Final exhibit text will be bilingual (French and English). Translation services are provided for free by the City.

    A letter of agreement and a loan agreement will be signed by all participants and/or institutions upon acceptance of their exhibit and loan of objects.

    The application form will take five-to-six minutes to complete.
