How nominations work

Where you are in the election process: Nomination period is open

If you decide to run in Kingston’s municipal election, you need to formally file nomination papers with the City. Find out what that involves!

Know the rules

  • You have to fill out an official nomination form. You can't raise or spend any campaign money, or engage in campaign activities, until you've filed it.

  • You or your agent must file the nomination papers in person and show ID. We encourage you to book an appointment to file your nomination so staff can review your paperwork and confirm you meet the basic requirements to run.

  • You are responsible for making sure your nomination form is complete and accurate. Do not sign any forms before filing your nomination.

  • You need at least 25 people to sign your endorsement of nomination. Each person who signs can support more than one candidate, but they need to be eligible to vote in Kingston on the day they sign.

Follow the steps

Before coming to your appointment:

Be prepared to pay the nomination fee of $200 for Mayor, or $100 for District Councillor or School Board Trustee. Payment can be made by cash, debit, credit, certified cheque or money order. You'll get your nomination fee back if you file your campaign financial statement on time.

Change your mind? You can withdraw your nomination in writing before 2 p.m. on Nomination Day (Friday, Aug. 21).

What happens next

After filing, you can begin campaigning within the rules of the election period. Find rules for election signs, doorknocking, campaigning and managing campaign donations and expenses on the City website.
