Will there be any impacts to transit?
No. The barrier curb installation will not impact any transit stops as gaps for transit buses will be incorporated into the design.
Will there be any impacts to people driving?
No. Drivers will notice a physical curb separating the bike lane, which can improve clarity and predictability for all road users.
Have other municipalities installed curb-protected bike lanes?
Yes! Several municipalities across Ontario have taken a similar approach.
How will the barrier curbs be funded?
The project is funded through the City’s approved capital budget, which is used for infrastructure improvements. The installation of curbs year-round is also expected to reduce ongoing operating costs by eliminating the need to seasonally install and remove the existing flexible bollards.
Will there be any impacts to the bike lanes during the winter?
The Public Works winter operations team will be ready for any adjustments to accommodate the new barrier curbs. The protected bike lane will be maintained throughout the winter months in adherence with the City’s Winter Maintenance Policy.
