Project Update: May 2026
Over the past few months, staff have continued to engage with key participant groups on the renaming of Indian Road, following a Motion passed by Kingston City Council in to change the name in June 2025.
Ongoing Engagement
Two additional Talking Circles took place in early 2026. During these sessions, Indigenous community members reaffirmed a commitement to participate in the renaming of Indian Road.
Using suggested themes and name ideas from residents of Indian Road, and with support from language learners and speakers, a shortlist of Ojibwe names was developed. The list of names was brought back to participants’ own networks for additional feedback, reviewed by Emergency Services staff and finalized in April 2026.
In early April, 44 community members, including residents of Indian Road, family members and nearby neighbours, attended an in-person meeting at Lord Strathcona Public School. A full summary of this meeting, including an overview of engagement to date and topics covered in the Q&A session was shared with attendees. Resident feedback was recorded and will be included in the report to City Council.
Shortlist Feedback
Residents of Indian Road have now been given an opportunity to provide feedback on the shortlist of names. This information was shared with residents via mailed letters, as well as with meeting participants and project followers by email.
If you are a resident of Indian Road and would like to submit feedback on the shortlist, please email GetInvolvedKingston@CityofKingston.ca before May 22, 2026.
Next Steps
Staff are working to review all project feedback and finalize a report that will be brought forward to City Council.
Participants will be notified of the date the report goes to Council and provided with information about attending as a delegation.
