Aberdeen Street will be reconstructed this year to significantly upgrade underground infrastructure and improve the pedestrian space. Work is expected to start in July and wrap up in November.

Supporting housing growth in the University District is a City priority requiring the sewer system to be upgraded from its current combined wastewater and stormwater sewer into separate systems. The existing watermain is also being upgraded to support the future needs of the neighbourhood. The project embraces green street concepts including additional tree planting and low-impact development for stormwater management, reducing flood risks and benefits tree growth.

This project is also an opportunity to improve pedestrian access and safety, in line with the City’s strategic goals and high volume of pedestrians in the University District. Added features include a 4-way stop at William Street, pedestrian lights, and the creation of a boulevard to add space between the sidewalk and roadway.

Construction impacts

Project work will begin in the summer and extend into the fall.

Access: Aberdeen Street will be fully closed to vehicles. Pedestrians will still be able to access buildings on Aberdeen Street. William Street will remain open.

Parking: On-street parking on Aberdeen Street will not be available.

Garbage and Recycling: Collection will continue. Aberdeen Street residents will need to write their address on their bins using a permanent marker. On collection day bins must be out by 6 a.m., then contractors will take them to the end of the street for collection and return them by the end of the day.
