The existing fence is planned to be removed due to the conflict with the adjacent plantings as well as to encourage clear sightlines into the park.  As per the City’s Parks Development Design Standards, fencing is only required when any playground is located within 20m of the adjacent road.  The new playground will be installed further than 20m from the roadway to minimize conflict as well as meet the City’s setback standard for playgrounds that do not require fencing.

Yes, there will be a formalized intersection improvements at Pembridge crescent and Milford Drive including a pedestrian sidewalk connection from the park to the existing sidewalk on Pembridge Crescent, new accessible, dropped curbs at the street, signage, as well as line painting at the intersection. All improvements will be accessible.

Based on the feedback received through the public engagement process, the following play elements have been selected:

• A single multi-story play structure with a transfer station, two slides, climbers, a low hammock swing, tactile and sensory play panels, and ground level activities for socializing and imaginative play. The play structure combines elements for ages 2-12.
• A 2-bay swing set, with an accessible disk swing, baby seat and accessible seat.
• A slanted rotating spinner.
• 2 Spring toys to evoke racing and cooperative play
• Free standing ground level sensory and tactile play panels, and
• A dedicated sand-play area

The new playground at Hudson Park will meet the design and size requirements as per the City’s newly adopted Playground Accessibility Plan. As Hudson Park primarily serves the local community, the playground will be constructed to a ‘Tier 3’ standard which will have a size of between 300 to 400 square meters.

Engineered wood fibre surfacing is included as the playground safety surfacing as per the Tier 3 standard set in the City’s Playground Accessibility Plan. 

The construction fencing will be installed by the contractor to ensure public safety. It is expected that the Contractor will require the closure of the site for the duration of the project.

As per feedback received during the public engagement period, the baseball diamond backstop will be retained to continue to allow informal community play. The granular infield will be removed and replaced with sod.

In March 2026, the City met with the community at an in-person engagement session and launched a survey on Get Involved Kingston, providing residents with an opportunity to review the proposed park improvements and provide feedback on their preferred playground equipment.

An on-line video presentation of the project and information panels were also provided to help participants understand the proposed improvements and changes to the park.

In March 2026, the City met with the community at an in-person engagement session to discuss the design options for both sections of Hudson Park. The City proceeded with the design development and construction package for Phase 1 of the project which is the park located between Hudson and Pembridge.

The second phase of the project will focus only on the pathway connection between Hudson Drive and Bourne Place. Phase 2 will be advanced once the construction of the first phase is underway. Further information will be shared on Get Involved Kingston as it becomes available.
