Intersection pedestrian signals

Pedestrians walking, rolling and biking across a crosswalk represented by directional arrows.

We are installing intersection pedestrian signals at several locations to make it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross busy roads. In 2026, we are installing these signals at the following intersections:

  • Bath Road at Lafleur Park
  • Concession Street at Kingscourt Avenue
  • Stephen Street at Patrick Street
  • Hickson Avenue at Montreal Street

How do intersection pedestrian signals work?

Pushing the button activates the traffic signal, which stops traffic and indicates when pedestrians can cross the road. Drivers turning from the side streets are controlled by a stop sign, rather than traffic signals; they may complete their turn only when the way is clear of both vehicles and pedestrians.

Installing intersection pedestrian signals supports the City’s strategic priority of Building an Active and Connected Community. Through this work, we are designing and constructing road and traffic calming measures at 30+ locations to improve pedestrian safety across Kingston.

Project benefits

  • The intersection pedestrian signals at all four intersections will help students and other community members cross busy roads safely.

  • The two-stage crossing at Bath Road-Lafleur Park will help pedestrians cross the four-lane road while keeping traffic moving smoothly.

Construction impacts

  • There will be occasional lane reductions as work takes place at each intersection. The intersection work is taking place through spring and early summer 2026.

  • Project update: August 2026

After working this spring to install lighting and accessible waiting areas, intersection pedestrian signals are now activated at the following locations:

    • Bath Road and Lafleur Park
    • Concession Street and Kingscourt Avenue
    • Stephen Street and Patrick Street

The location at Hickson Avenue and Montreal Street is scheduled for completion this fall.

    Two-stage crossing

The intersection pedestrian signals at Bath Road and Lafleur Park differ from the other locations above by allowing pedestrians to cross in two stages. This approach allows pedestrians to safely cross the four-lane road while keeping traffic moving smoothly.

Here are a few benefits of the new crossing for pedestrians and drivers:

    • Shorter, safer crossing distance with an accessible waiting area

    • More time for pedestrians to cross compared to a single-stage crossing

    • Reduced vehicle wait times in each direction
