Starr Reid Park Little Forest
Little Forests Kingston, in partnership with the City of Kingston, will be bringing a little forest to Starr Reid Park in the Rideau Heights neighbourhood.
What is a little forest?
A little forest is a highly dense, small-scale, and multi-layered planting of indigenous trees. Located within urban areas, they bring important biodiversity and woodland ecology to the City. Little Forests Kingston is a community group dedicated to expanding little forests within Kingston. You can learn more about little forests and the mission and work of Little Forest Kingston on their website.
What is the process to bring a little forest to Starr Reid?
Starr Reid was identified as a good candidate for a little forest through collaboration between the City’s forestry team and Little Forests. A section along the back of the park will be allocated to the planting.
Planting is expected to begin this fall in 2026. Once this is completed, the little forest will take a few years to establish itself.
Possibility of edible plants
The idea of including species commonly understood to be edible, such as plums and paw paws, in this little forest is being considered . Whether edible plants are included will depend on the results of upcoming soil testing.
