Consultation has concluded

The City of Kingston is looking for public input on the use of funds from the Community Benefit Program (Samsung) reserve.

The fund is part of an agreement with Kingston Solar LP (Samsung), which is contributing $1,250 per megawatt (MW) of power produced by their project to the City of Kingston over the next 20 years (approx. $92,000 per year). The fund is to be used to support projects in rural Kingston. Collected since 2015, the fund has so far been used to plant approximately 2,000 trees near the solar project, replace a play structure, plant trees and build a shade structure at Elginburg Public School.

On March 24, 2020, Council approved the staff recommendation to create a Community Benefit Program (Samsung) Reserve with the purpose of accumulating funds to acquire parkland or natural land, with further consultation to take place after 2022.

Between now and August 12, the City of Kingston wants to hear how you would spend the Solar LP Community Benefit Fund for projects in rural Kingston in the coming years. This feedback will determine how the funds will be used every year moving forward.

Results collected will be compiled and reported back to council and the Rural Advisory committee for consideration and allocation of funds. Questions about this project can be sent to TSnow@CityofKingston.ca.
