Parks & Recreation Master Plan Update
Consultation has concluded.
The Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update was approved by Council on May 4, 2021. Download the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and Needs Assessment.
The City of Kingston is updating its Parks and Recreation Master Plan aimed at supporting opportunities for active fun over the next 15 years!
The previous plan, developed in 2010, provides an implementation strategy for the development of parks and recreation services until 2025. A number of its recommendations have already been achieved, and a number of new initiatives are now underway.
This Plan helps the City guide and manage parks and open space development, recreation and leisure services, programs, events, facilities, marinas and other recreation amenities.
The goal of the update is to:
- assess the work completed and successes achieved to date, and
- identify investments, policies, and processes to support recreational service needs for the next 15 years.
For more details on this project, see the City’s project page.

Kingston BMX Associationover 2 years agoPump track
Would love to see a asphalt pump track they are popping up everywhere. And with our growing cycling community it would be a great asset and would draw in a crowd of all ages fun safe and hours of exercise. Cell solutions builds them.

There is not currently a publicly accessible labyrinth in Kingston. It would create a new activity option for people of all ages and abilities, and would create an opportunity / location for new programming that supports mental health.

Area boat launches suitable for canoes and kayak became much more important as I tried to kayak on the water safely distanced from people as daily exercise I could wheel my kayak to behind my bike.

Especially during this Covid winter, it is really important to keep City park pathways such as those in Lake Ontario Park clear of snow and ice. These are being heavily used when it's safe to do so, and that's really important for residents' fitness and mental health. I understand that normally there may not be the budget for this through the winter, but in Winter 2021 those funds really need to be spent on this. Besides, settling one slip and fall lawsuit would likely be more expensive than the winter maintenance budget over several years. Thanks!

ALamontalmost 5 years agoUpgrades to neighbourhood parks for children
Many neighbourhood parks in Kingston are in need of revamping and repair. We can encourage exercise and outside play with our children by providing more complex/ engaging climbing structures, splash pads, etc. within walkable distances from their homes.
3frankcalmost 5 years agoKids' mountain bike trails at Belle Island
In Kingston, there is limited access to public trails through the woods for kids to ride bikes. The existing trail at Belle Island and the grounds of the golf course (currently being redeveloped), could offer a great opportunity to allow access to this activity for kids without the means to get to MTB Kingston trails and other private access trails. Our club has the expertise to help design and build these trails for almost no cost, which would increase healthy outdoor options for a huge range of Kingstonians and kids of all ages.

In Chatham, Ontario there is a park called Kingston Park. There they have a variety of equipment stationed for various body weight exercises. If needed I can provide pictures of the equipment. Furthmore I think Lake Ontario park is perfectly set up for this.
2christopher horeczyalmost 5 years agoParking and access for seniors and persons with mobility difficulties
A lack of parking adjacent to lakefront parks is a deterrent to seniors, persons that use wheelchairs and persons with other mobility limitations. Ensure that parking is available adjacent to these areas for seniors or other persons with limited mobility. During the weekdays, most waterfront parking is currently absorbed by people who work full time at the university or KGH. Establish a limited parking duration (say three hours) and enforce the regulation to ensure that employees are not using these lots.
2npalmost 5 years agomore parkland, cheaper sports and rec programs, more public washrooms in parks
Breakwater improvements are great. Richardson beach could be upgraded too. More parkland is needed--we lost a great opportunity to do something magnificent in block D and ended up with just a pathway along the waterfront (though that's better than nothing), but let's not lose any more public space. Parks are what make this city so livable. Parks are good because they're free. Artillery Park and and the waterpark and Invista are a bit pricey. It would be good to see them more tax-supported so that more people could benefit.
