Traffic signal control and detection upgrades

We’re working with Utilities Kingston to upgrade traffic signal technology and detection equipment across the city. These upgrades will improve traffic flow and safety for all road users.
Improvements include:
- Better vehicle and bicycle detection to control intersection signal timing.
- Roadside controller and other hardware upgrades to:
- Allow for more timely and effective maintenance
- Unlock opportunities for new technology to enhance travel for pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and drivers, such as transit signal priority and pedestrian safety measures.
Some intersections will have additional traffic signal or intersection control work scheduled at the same time to efficiently complete these upgrades.
When the project is complete, these upgrades will benefit travellers across nearly 180 signalized intersections in Kingston. The intersection work is taking place over six phases; the completed work and scheduled signal detection upgrades for 2026 are indicated in the map below.
